Custom Pergola Design & Installation in Arizona
Pergolas can benefit any number of yard types. From the homey patio to the expansive back lawn, pergolas can be made to fit just about anywhere. But what is a pergola, exactly?
Sometimes confused with arbors and gazebos, a pergola lies somewhere in-between the two. It consists of columns (2 or 4, depending on the type) that hold up a latticework on top, which can be closed or open. Pergolas are larger than arbors (which are generally small, decorative arches), but usually do not have an enclosed roof or the octagonal shape of gazebos. (Though a pergola with a roof is still an option.)
Pergolas are a worthwhile addition to an Arizona home for many reasons. For starters, they extend living space, creating a welcoming space outdoors to enjoy any time of the year. You’ll actually want to spend more time outside, whether it’s to relax and read a book with a cool beverage by your side or entertain family and friends on the weekends.
Pergolas provide just enough shade without being stifling and help protect your outdoor furniture from the elements as well. Retractable pergola covers and canopies can provide additional shade. Even a hot, Arizona summer afternoon can be pleasant with the help of a strategically placed pergola.
Aside from the immediate benefits, pergola installation is also an easy, inexpensive way to increase your property value and add curb appeal, both of which come in handy if you ever decide to sell your home. They did a fantastic job all around and their attention to detail was extremely good. Had very good creative ideas on how to transform my yard into a beautiful landscape and executed perfectly! Very competitive with the prices as well.
I am so glad I chose Turf masters for my backyard. Their price was reasonable. They did my entire backyard in one day! It is absolutely beautiful. Exactly what I wanted. The guys on the crew worked extremely hard. Eric is very easy to work with.
I highly recommend them.
Turf Monsters have been an amazing company to work with for our backyard landscaping in our brand new home. They provided clear and concise information from the beginning, from design to cost. They were also very accommodating with any changes. Mark and Ryan have been a pleasure to work with. The crew was very hardworking. The Masonry work done on the BBQ and Fountain is awesome. Great work with precision. We are so excited to enjoy our backyard with family and friends. Highly recommend Turf Monsters to everyone.
Incredibly happy I chose AZ Turf Monsters for the remodeling of my ailing/outdated and simple putting course in the back yard. Eric designed a course with more experience components, great layout and provided a solution to eliminate a seam. Vic and team were meticulous craftsmen delivering a beyond expectation installation. Thanks everyone at AZ Turf Monsters!!
Turf Monsters crushed it on my backyard renovation. The experience was great from the estimate, throughout construction, until the final plant went in place. Huge shoutout to Jeff, the PM, who was a pleasure to work with. My wife and I both work long hours during the week and Jeff was very flexible to accommodate our availability. He even met us at the stone store won a Sunday morning to ensure we chose a paver sample that we loved. I would recommend Turf Monsters AZ to my friends, family, neighbors, etc. time and time again.
Choosing the Right Type of Pergolas
Attached Pergolas
While freestanding pergolas may have been the traditional design, attached pergolas have quickly made a name for themselves amongst home and business owners.
Attached pergolas have a multitude of benefits. They tend to be the more budget-friendly option since they don’t require quite as many materials as a freestanding one. (Attached pergolas are usually anchored by two outer posts while the other end is secured to the house itself.)
Attached pergolas also create a nice threshold between your indoor and outdoor living space. They also make excellent, cozy areas to enjoy outdoor dining and entertaining. Speaking of which, attached pergolas are the perfect spot for outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and grills. With the addition of some comfy outdoor furniture, you have yourself a quiet place for some quick fresh air or to spend an entire evening outside.
Freestanding Pergolas
Freestanding pergolas, as the name implies, are those that stand alone and are not attached to other structures. The biggest advantage of freestanding pergolas is their flexibility: Where they can be placed, their size and height, and orientation. You can really get creative with these types of pergolas since you’re not bound to the limits of attaching them to your home or other structure.
This type of pergola is very handy if the structure of your house is not compatible with anchoring an attached one to it. They also make great additions to pool areas, providing some protection from the sun. Freestanding pergolas are the perfect addition to gardens, creating a secluded sitting area where you can watch the bees and butterflies.
Choosing the Right Pergola Materials: AlumawoodⓇ
Outdoor pergolas can be constructed with many materials, including wood, teak, metal, vinyl, and fiberglass. AlumawoodⓇ is a newer material that has gained favor for use in pergola designs in the southwest. It combines the best qualities of wood and aluminum. It is made of aluminum that has been made to look like wood. AlumawoodⓇ is much less expensive than other pergola materials and less maintenance. Unlike real wood, AlumawoodⓇ won’t burn, crack, peel, rot, split, or warp. You won’t need to re-seal or coat your AlumawoodⓇ pergola either. And, because it’s made of aluminum, it will help protect your outdoor furniture from the elements as well.

I have written proof of multiple communications with my project manager raising concerns well before I chose to cancel the pergola. Claiming I never raised concerns until after my refund was denied is simply false. I said you offered to pay the permit fees but that was not until AFTER I said I wanted to cancel and no long work with you due to the issues I already experienced.
Origional Post:
I would never work with Turf Monsters again, nor would I ever recommend them to anyone. My experience has been nothing but frustration, misrepresentation, and poor-quality work.
When I signed my contract, I was told the project (turf, patio, and pergola) would start within 1–2 weeks and be completed in a day or two. Instead, it dragged out for over a month with multiple no-shows, last-minute cancellations, and poor communication. I had to reschedule my new patio furniture delivery and take unnecessary time off work because they could not keep their word.
The quality of the work that was completed was disappointing. I received chipped pavers and foundation damage (which I made them repair) and smaller trees than promised. I requested 8' privacy trees, but the estimate listed 5–6' trees. When I questioned it, my project manager (Anthony) promised they would be at least 6'. Instead, I received two 5' trees and one 6' tree that do not provide any privacy. On top of that, the irrigation lines they installed do not work, and the new trees are dying despite raising this concern multiple times. They promised to come look at it but never showed. When I brought it up to the owner (Mike), he ignored it completely. They still have not repaired the issue. After the patio and turf work was finished, they also left materials in my front yard and on the street, and it took four days and multiple requests before they removed them. At one point, my project manager told me he was even frustrated with the workers.
The pergola portion of the project was especially problematic. I was first told no permit was required, later told it was optional, and eventually told I had to obtain one for the pergola structure. I pulled the permit rather than pay the company $500 plus permit costs. I contacted the township, gathered the requirements, and submitted drawings provided by my project manager. I was later told I would also need an electrical permit on top of the permit I already requested. Then, when the permit was rejected because the drawings were incomplete, I was told I need to pay an additional $1,200 for an engineering plan to get the permit approved. When I called the township later to clarify, I was informed that Alumawood pergola structures do not require a permit at all — only the electrical work needed a permit.
I canceled the pergola due to these constant changes, delays, and the lack of trust I had in Turf Monsters to do the work properly. At first, my project manager told me I would receive a refund. Later, they changed their story, claimed the pergola had already been ordered (without proof), and tried to charge me a 25% “restocking fee” that does not apply under their own contract. They also inflated the pergola cost to $10,000, when the estimate clearly lists the pergola structure at $7,560.
When I stated I wanted to cancel the pergola because of all of the issues, they did offer to pay half of engineering fees, then all of the permit and engineering fees, however my trust with them had already been severed by that point and I did not want to continue to work with them.
When I stated I wanted to move forward with cancelling, I was told I had only two options: proceed with the pergola or cancel with no refund. This is not only unprofessional but completely inconsistent with the written contract. There is no way I would allow this company to continue to work on my project with all of the issues I had already experienced.
Turf Monsters has proven that they do not stand by their quality of work, they do not honor their timelines, and they do not operate with honesty or transparency.
Steve came out to see what we envisioned for extending our patio with pavers. He truly understood what we wanted and made it happen. In just 2 and a half days the job was completed.
28' X 5'10" of pavers were installed, plus a 28' X 10" X 12" footing was poured for us to install an awning.
Oscar moved the sprinkler valves and a couple of sprinkler heads out beyond the new patio extension.
The entire crew members worked hard to get it all done as quickly as possible in well over 100° heat.
They were very professional, courteous, and much appreciated.
Overall, a good experience, quality product, and workmanship.
The project was completed and my dogs and I absolutely love it! I fully recommend this company and if I find reason to use them again, I definitely will! Do yourself a favor and choose this company. You will be blown away by their outstanding quality of work!
Anthony was the best to work with. He was attentive to every detail. Thank you for a job well done! Tom and Kathy
Response to the owner: My review was about a serious safety issue involving one of your company vehicles, not entertainment. Instead of addressing the concern professionally, your sarcastic response downplayed a situation that could have caused real harm. Your response lacks professionalism and care for community safety. I hope future feedback is taken more seriously.
Turf Monsters delivered five-star service from start to finish! Greg, our salesperson and project manager, guided us every step of the way in creating our dream backyard. He was patient, flexible, and worked with us through multiple design changes until we landed on the perfect layout.
Armando and his crew were fantastic on the execution side—professional, detail-oriented, and clearly committed to quality craftsmanship. Greg also respected our budget, making sure we got exactly what we envisioned at a competitive price.
From consultation to completion, Turf Monsters truly knocked it out of the park. We couldn’t be happier with the result.
