Carefree, Arizona is a rural township located in Maricopa County. Carefree sits at the northeast corner of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, bordering Scottsdale, and is slightly more than eight square miles with 4,045 residents in 2020. Carefree has a hot, semi-arid climate that experiences hot summers and mild winters. Due to its proximity to the rain-catching mountains, Carefree receives about 70 percent more rainfall annually compared to Phoenix.

The Carefree Sundial is a unique architectural feature boasted by the township. It was designed by Joe Wong and John I. Yellott in 1959 and is thought to be the third-largest sundial in the Western Hemisphere. The structure is made from a steel frame and anodized copper and measures 90 feet in diameter, 35 feet high, and extends 72 feet.

Carefree was also once home to Southwestern Studios, later named Carefree Studios before being demolished in 1999. The film and television studio was used to film The New Dick Van Dyke Show, The Other Side of the Wind, and parts of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure among other projects.

Does imitation turf fade or discolor with age?
