North Phoenix is a neighborhood in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix is the capital city of Arizona and the fifth most populous city in the United States. The Hohokam people occupied the Phoenix area for 2,000 before they abandoned the area around 1500 AD. The Hohokam are recognized for their large-scale irrigation networks. Their prehistoric canal system was the most complex in the Western Hemisphere and allowed for farmlands in the region. When colonial settlers came into the area, they noticed the remains of the ancient canals and reestablished an irrigation system to support settlers. The remains of these canals inspired Lord Darrell Duppa to suggest the name Phoenix as it describes a city rising from the ruins of a former civilization.
